If you like rock 'n' roll, sex, drugs, lesbians and violence, then this might just be
the movie for you. It's about an all-girl rock 'n' roll group - three-quarters of whom
are lesbians, though one of the three quarters wings both ways we're told early on.
This might be because she is the star and really, movies need a bit of boy on girl
action to sell them. Now I'm as keen on hot lesbian action as the next guy (who said
keener?) but I have to say I was glad when the drummer's good-looking,
jailbird-with-a-heart-of-gold brother turned up, 'cause I didn't really think much
of Gina Gershon's femme squeeze. Anyway, they're a not-successful-at-all band despite the fact that three of them have film star looks ('cos they are film stars, dummy). Also despite the fact that the songs aren't bad and Gina Gershon can actually sing. Apparently it is based on a play by one, Cheri Lovedog, and maybe with Cheri and her mates on stage it would be understandable that they were beyond bottom of the bill, but this is almost Hollywood-land and we need to suspend disbelief. If you don't know Gina (like Troy McClure) you may remember her from such films as The Insider, Face/Off, and Bound. Drea De Matteo is that chick from The Sopranos - Tony's nephew's girlfriend; you know the one... And then the main lesbian is this Ellen DeGeneris-looking chick who turns out to be Lori Petty - you know, Tank Girl. (Remember her? No? Me neither. Where did she get to? I kinda liked Tank Girl.) Anyway, the plot goes something like girl meets girl; girl breaks up with girl; girl meets friend's jailbird-with-a-heart-of-gold brother. Oh sure, there's some rock band trying to make the big time thing going on and some childhood abuse revelations, a little bit of rape, a bit of extreme duck tape bondage (I'm fed up with dashes) and a contract that gets what it, and most contracts, deserve. Hell, I'm making me want to watch this again. Yes, it's fringe-indie, yes it's well-acted and scripted, yes the soundtrack is good enough to be believable and yes it kills an hour and a half in pleasant fashion. If you're about to buy a DVD and are considering going for a big studio offering that isn't Batman Begins or The Incredibles or A History Of Violence, then forget the other crap and buy this. You'll thank me.
